Very Bad Wizards is a podcast featuring a philosopher (Tamler Sommers) and a psychologist (David Pizarro), who share a love for ethics, pop culture, and cognitive science, and who have a marked inability to distinguish sacred from profane. Each podcast includes discussions of moral philosophy, recent work on moral psychology and neuroscience, and the overlap between the two.

trade offs

listening to these two deviants speak incisively and eloquently about titty-wrenching topics like Tree Bill and Norality will make your brain bigger but your soul less cleanly. The dilemma is thus - listen: big-brain but tainted-soul OR don’t listen: puny-brain but pure-soul. Choose wisely.

Smart........but Silly as 8th grade boys

It’s impossible to listen to these very bad wizards without a mix of competing emotions. Let’s go through them. 1) you feel dirty listening to them talk about porn, sex robots, and other things your mother would disapprove of. 2) you realize they are making some good points about the sex robots so you are enjoying the critical thinking. 3) You are laughing at these points but feel like you are doing something wrong in the enjoyment of the discussion. You remember feeling the same way when you watched pulp fiction. 4) they get off the porn and sex robot discussion and explore the book of Ecclesiastes. This discussion blows your mind and you go find a bible to read it again with open and fresh eyes. It changes the way you think about life. You read more of the Bible like the book of Job. Somehow these silly men with the maturity of 8th graders made you wiser. 5) they talk about some Dostoevsky books and they blow your mind again. So you start reading Notes from the Underground. Then move on through the Dostoevsky literature pile and become cynical, wise, and depressed. The VBW podcast is an acquired taste. And even then it’s not for everyone. But dang....I love it. I can’t recommend it highly enough but you might hate me for the recommendation if it’s not your taste.

I thought I was listening to PEL. I rode the red rocket until culmination and was not disappointed.

the second best podcast ever.

i could leave it at the subject, but i would be remiss to not elaborate slightly. every time i have sex with my girlfriend, i imagine that i'm either tamler or dave (alternatingly) so i can feel she's being completely satisfied.

Skip the Pop

I LOVE it when Dave and Tamler dive into the weeds of philosophical and psychological issues. But when they’re talking about a movie, show, or book it puts me to sleep.

deep and entertaining

One of my top 5 podcasts! Not dumbed down, over produced, or politically correct. It’s great listening to discussions between scientists that are passionate, knowledgable and funny - what more could one ask of a science podcast?

If you enjoy listening to middle aged men discuss porn and porn-adjacent topics (sometimes related to ethics and social psychology), then this is the podcast for you.

My Two Faves

I’ve been listening to Tamler and Dave for years now, and after listening to the gratitude segment today, I decided to submit a review. These guys are delightful. I’m a lawyer, know nothing of philosophy or psychology, but love every minute of their podcast. It’s smart, fun, and accessible, and my commute wouldn’t be the same without it. Thank you both, and for those of you considering it, give it a listen!

For building new neural pathways in your brain

I started listening to VBW podcast the first time Sam Harris was on, and I became an instant fan. I’ve listened to all episodes since, and watched many of the movies suggested during episode discussions.I graduated with an engineering degree from the US, and live in the Middle East. During my undergrad studies I was able to enroll in philosophy classes and was an active member of the philosophy club at the university. Now that I’m back home, and back to reality, the podcast provides me with a window to what it used to be like in my college days.. every episode takes me back to where I left off in philosophy club. So thanks guys for giving me a seat at your table.

Smart and enjoyable, with some rough edges that make it worth while.

Yeah, I need my fix of university professor level philosophy and psychology and inappropriate jokes ever few weeks. David and Tamler have a relaxed, approachable but smart style that is enjoyable to listen to. The occasion discussion about television or movies tossed in with serious but funny debates of the nature of consciousness or identity are far better than the rambling of Joe Rogan. I like Joe, but my mind would simply go soft from the lack of organized thought if I continued to listen to him. Like Sam Harris? Then try these guys.

Best Thing on the Internet?

Paul Bloom says VBW is his favorite thing on the internet. Assuming he has heard of Pornhub, which is safe to assume considering how much porn is discussed on this show, Paul Bloom is lying. Still VBW is probably the next best thing on the internet, after Pornhub.

Thought provoking

This podcast is thoughtful, deep, interesting, insightful, and often funny. If you like discussions involving deep, thorny issues and the random dirty joke (and lots of f bombs) then this podcast is for you.
