reviewed: To Live and Die in LA

    I spoke too soon.

I got a little hasty with my intital review, this is the first podcast I’ve ever heard where it really delves in to listening to BOTH sides because basically in almost every case the family of the accused is so tight lipped about the whole thing and so it was hard to listen to some of this, especially the empathizing with or agreeing with the family of the murderer.. but.. as I kept listening I realized what a wealth of information it provided, playing “devils advocate” even if sometimes it was extremely hard to hear.. i do still have some icky feelings about certain things like how quickly the host seemed to jump on the gone girl theory when it was first given and the warrior death title but all in all I think this is an amazing unique podcast and it was incredible to hear it unfold in real time and both the host and Jayden should definitely team up for more cases.

I’ll listen to anything from this series and Neil!

I’m a pretty tough critic so when I say I couldn’t wait to listen to the next episode, I don’t say that lightly. The two seasons took me on a journey and I didn’t know what was coming next. I hope they do another story because I love the way Neil reports. Thorough, investigative, and interesting. I WANT MORE

    Couldn’t get into it

A podcast has to grab me in the first 15 - 20 minutes, and this one just didn’t, especially when I saw that there were 12 episodes of this story. I might have stuck around if there were 3 or 4 episodes in total.

    Addicted & Well Handled

I am thoroughly addicted - Since these are on a time table I like listening to older cases (well… dont like that they’re real but you get it). I think that they’re all cultivated in an objective, empathetic and mature way. I like the combination of police & detective work and the journalistic style neil brings. i appreciate that this even exists out of an authentic want for justice and to bring community together, to find resolve and gossip.

    Disappointed in this one

Poorly done and very unorganized. I finished not knowing much more than I did when I started. The entire thing could have been better organized and reduced to 2-3, MAYBE 4, 45 minute podcasts.

    Neil -Stop saying… “Right“… “Yeah“..

Every three seconds… Interrupting your interviewee. You’re very correct in terms of characterizing yourself as an amateur… But never heard anything like this and even the crappiest of podcasts. So irritating. No thank you

    Best Podcast Out There

Didn’t think you do better than Season 1 and then there was Season 2. Thank you for your hard work and please come back for a Season 3 or the arrest of Elaine’s mother.

    Great podcast

Both seasons are fantastic. I am flabbergasted that people are defending Elaine’s abusive mother (regardless if she was truly involved at all).

    Well done

I find myself checking for a Season 3 of To Live or Die in LA. I found the beginning of this series especially compelling, because Strauss genuinely seems reticent to jump into podcasting and especially true crime podcasting. The two cases ‘chosen’ are well explored, the people behind the investigation (Strauss, et al) are genuinely shocked, nervous, excited, reticent and contemplative. They reach out when they feel they are in over their heads. It feels like you are doing the investigation with friends and is done humbly and self deprecatorily in a way that pulls the listener in. Oddly, the only drawback is the investigator Jayden Brant’s approach(?) integration (?). There were many things Strauss seemed to logically discover or uncover with a little digging that Brant should have found on his own. I found it difficult to keep Brant in perspective. Knowing that he has other cases intellectually doesn’t quite make up for times he seems MIA or a little behind. On second thought, maybe his seeming inactivity or responsiveness presents a realistic view we don’t often see. PI’s and investigators can feel difficult to get ahold of. They can leave you feeling like you can’t move forward until you hear back. Now I’m torn on my previous assertion. Maybe Brant is exactly one more element of the appeal. As podcasters build a brand, you may see them trading quality for quantity. As much as I’m anxious for more, To Live or Die in LA is a logical and well done expansion of the Tenderfoot brand.

    Amazing investigative podcast!

I’m SUPER picky when it comes to the way a true crime story is told and Neil absolutely nails it! He looks at both sides of the story by successfully interviewing those who were close to the victim and the alleged suspect. I’ve listened to both seasons and now I’m on the hunt for another similar to this. Hard to find good true crime podcasts like this!
