tRumpy talk

If you need more hate you can't beat the talk show. Rumors of Grubers fair assessment of Apple or tRump are false. Orange man bad.

Not what this podcast used to be...

The host is one of many aging Apple Mac prognosticators still around that are no longer relevant in today’s complex tech world and seems lost. He has also gone fully hard left politically which just cuts his USA audience in half. People don’t want a cell phone review guy to impose their political views on them.

5 out of 3.5 stars, in my book

I’d give this podcast 5 out of 3.5 stars if I could, not the other way around. It’s a great show. Plus I love when Gruber talks about things other than Apple. His rants on politics and sports are always great.

Hysterical leftist

Another left leaning media person who needs to inject hysterical politics into a tech podcast.

Used to be about tech 🤮

Not it’s boring talk about sports and politics by someone who clearly is no longer in his lane. I have much better podcasts to listen to for those topics. I guess now I need a better one for tech too.

Great Podcast

I felt I had to rate the show after seeing Daring Fireball’s latest post about this being “America’s favorite 3.5-star podcast” because John Gruber just doesn’t care about this type of stuff. If he did, he would be asking for people to rate him on Podcasts (neé iTunes?). The show sometimes has sports. I couldn’t care less about sports but somehow I don’t skip those parts. The rest is a thoughtful look at the *reasons* why Apple does what it does, and a platform for John to push Apple to do the right thing for its customers. He doesn’t take to hyperbole, he sometimes has bits of unreleased info, and he always has amazing guests. If you find him boring, take the time to critically decipher what he’s actually saying. He’s usually right. And if he’s not, he will be the first to tell you about it.

Meandering with too little substance

I like Gruber, but it’s hard to listen to this podcast. He’s arguably the greatest long-lasting Apple commentator, and his blog reflects that when he’s not writing an unhinged rant about how half the voting public are bigots. That ironic bigotry occasionally slips into this podcast, but that’s not why The Talk Show is bad. John fancies himself as Johnny Carson, but he’s more Ed McMahon - a functioning alcoholic with meandering topics, repetitive guests, and no direction, who is constantly giggling at nothing. That being said, he’s got a good nugget of commentary or information every now and then, but the mine is just about dry, and it’s getting harder and harder to dig.

This show is loosing favor with me

This was my favorite podcast for a long time, even after the transition from 5by5.But in recent years it just seems like Gruber is coasting. Episodes are released infrequently and erratically. Weeks will go by without an episode, and then right before WWDC, two episodes will come out back to back, with no time to listen before the event. In the case of this year, there was an episode all about Play Date, an independent hand held video game console, right before the keynote. I just don’t get it...I have always loved Gruber’s personality and don’t mind the meandering topics, but there are some problems recently. The guest list is increasingly less diverse and insightful (some exceptions include Joanna Stern and Ben Thompson). Gruber repeats off topic anecdotes from week to week, and has a lot of holes in his knowledge about modern Apple, particularly the intricacies of iOS, tvOS, the iPad, and Apple Watch. He is extremely knowledgeable about the Mac and iPhone, but he seems perfectly happy leaving it at that. As time progresses, this perspective is becoming more and more limited in relevance. In a time where we have consistent and quality shows like ATP, Upgrade, and Connected, I wonder where The Talk Show really fits in.At the end of the day, Gruber will do Gruber. And good for him. But this isn’t a show that has the same appeal that it used to.

Same stories every show

I think John forgets what he talks about because he says the same thing and even recounts same stories every show. Can basically predict what will be said by him every time. Horizons are too limited.

Always a Good Conversation

John Gruber has an uncanny ability as a conversationalist to keep things interesting, informative, entertaining and thought-provoking. The episodes are long, yes, but the conversation always flows naturally from topic to topic centering around technology.

He is finally out of touch with the Apple of today.

Plain and simple. He is getting old. Just like Marcos. Always complaining about how Apple is killing his Mac. Complains and noise. Negativity. Depressing at this point.

It’s a great dynamic conversation

There are very few podcasts I enjoy that bounce around topics in the way that The Talk Show does. TTS keeps my attention while providing an entertaining as well as a deep and thoughtful look at tech (and other topics).

Podcast kinda goes nowhere

I wish he was more focused on Apple topics. He just strays off talking about baseball and random stuff. I wasn’t going to write a review but the last straw was when the podcast before WWDC 2019 was about some stupid indie handheld game console being announced. Like, the heck.

Rambling and Incoherent

If you want to listen to an aimless podcast that goes nowhere you’ve come to the right place. For a good tech podcast, look elsewhere.

If you like this sort of thing, it's the sort of thing you'll like

The Talk Show isn't for everyone. John can be slow, and rambling, and unfocused, and in today's ADHD culture, that makes some folks crazy. Listening to the podcast, especially at 1x speed, will make the impatient insane. If you just want quick, hot takes on the latest tech news, there are other podcasts that will satisfy your attention. But if you've got some patience, and can let the conversation breathe, John has great insights and stories, and always has interesting guests. He'll cover the latest news (slowly), but what's genuinely interesting and different for The Talk Show is the time they take to zoom out and look at the meta around the news. It's not about Samsung's awful foldable phone, it's the "how did Samsung get to this point?" that's interesting. And then contrasting it with Apple's premature announcement of their charging pad, and subsequent cancellation. The news is covered well elsewhere; what's interesting is to talk about what it means, and think about the culture in the two companies that lead to two very different results. That's why you listen to The Talk Show.Haters are going to hate. But if John's sensibilities and aesthetics align with your own, you'll love this podcast.

Beat tech analysis out there

I’ve listened to Gruber for years and have found he is more accurate than almost anyone. If you’re of similar age and had a Mac growing up, you’ll feel like you grew up alongside him. You’ll also wonder why he likes the Yankees. Or baseball. I’d love to hear his thoughts on political topics as well. The importance of technology has been supplanted by this political emergency. We’ve heard his rumination on politics before, so we know he’s insightful. So please John, even if it takes some inebriation, maybe start a short political podcast?
