At the Penumbra, you might follow Juno Steel, a brooding, sharp-witted private eye on Mars, as he tangles with an elusive homme fatale, tracks dangerous artifacts of an ancient alien civilization, and faces his three greatest fears: heights, blood, and relationships. Or you might enter the world of the Second Citadel, where the merciless Sir Caroline must corral a team of emotionally distraught all-male knights to defend their city against mind-manipulating monsters...even the ones they’ve fallen in love with. These audio dramas and more await you in the Penumbra, dear traveler. We hope you enjoy your stay. (Start with "UPDATED 1.01: Juno Steel and the Case of the Murderous Mask" or "1.09: Second Citadel - The Head of the Janus Beast.") Amazing

I’ve binged approximately 6 long running fiction podcasts in the last month in search of one that would really hit me. Upon listening to the first episode of this show, I realized I’d finally found the perfect podcast. It has everything I could possibly hope for, and the wit is faster than the speed of sound. This is some seriously great writing, great voice acting, and great listening. Get some gay sci-fi dramedy blasting through your earbuds ASAP

my favorite

If you are coming here after having just started your journey into the world of podcasts I can assure you that this podcast will not disappoint. The sheer amount of diversity and queer characters is magnificent and the story is even better. I binged it in a week and it is quite possibly my favorite out of every podcast I’ve ever heard.♥️

I'd kill for Rita!!

This podcast is amazing!! Pretty much everyone in the Juno Steel universe is gender non conforming and of ambiguous sexuality!! This is so cool to see as a non binary minor!! I love this so much!!

Love it!!

I happened to find this podcast while I was on a horror story kick! This is some of the best story telling I’ve encountered, and I’ve read my whole life. The queerness and the sciFi are phenomenally intertwined. I couldn’t be more in love!!

I want to love this

But I don’t. It’s a bit too much of a noir spoof for me to really lose myself in it. The style distracts from the substance. There’s some good moments but the characters are more like caricatures, and I’m sorry, Rita’s voice is so obnoxious and ear piercing that I literally have to fast forward when she starts talking. Not a good sign. On paper this is right up my alley; it’s queer, it’s sci-fi, it’s got humor and heart. But it never fully gelled for me. Got through the first season but abandoned season two after a couple episodes.

Everything Sci-Fi Should Be

The writing has always been beyond incredible in this show, but it continues to strike me with every new episode just how rare a story this well-constructed is. Penumbra leans into the genre of its stories, somehow drawing out the best of each and weaving something that feels both new and comfortably familiar. Science fiction has always been about imagining a future where things are different, but often this idealistic vision can be limited by the scope of its creators sights. There are no messy oppression metaphors, no “but what if the protesters are TOO extreme?” themes, none of the uncomfortable pitfalls that sci-fi so often falls into. Each genre is so distilled into its purest form and delivered in a way that never fails to be funny, engaging, and beautiful. There is so much care here. If you enjoy the spellbinding writing of podcasts like Alice Isn’t Dead, the clever use of audio editing like Hello From The Magic Tavern, the original music of shows like The Adventure Zone, or just love a good found family story, please check this out. It is heart-wrenching, suspenseful, and hilarious. This podcast welcomes you into its universe with open arms, and for once it really does feel genuine. Thank you for making me feel seen, Penumbra team, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Well worth the wait

My friend has been trying to get me to listen to this podcast, and podcasts in general, for a little over a year now. A little less than a week ago I finally decided “what the hell I’ll give it a try” and alas here we are. Best decision I have ever made. This is so good, truly a work of art and I absolutely adore it. All the single stories, Second Citadel, and Juno Steel stories are amazing and I would suggest them to anyone.

A Riveting Rip-Roaring Ride

This podcast deserves to be in a spotlight, name flashing on a marquee board. The Penumbra is masterfully crafted storytelling, with inclusivity in every nook and cranny. It’s refreshing because it doesn’t pander, rather it weaves these aspects in just as you would find them in life. The team behind this podcast obviously has a love for their craft, because you can hear it in every single episode. I’ll tell everyone I know to listen to Penumbra!

The Most Wonderful Podcast

The Penumbra Podcast is groundbreaking. It provides several representations of LGBTQIA+ identities that other shows don’t typically touch on; however, the inclusivity never takes away from the story or makes it sound “preachy” in any way. Masterfully written and performed.

Fantastic Podcast!!

They are super committed to LGBTQIAA+ characters, which I didn’t even realize but really ended up appreciating! The show is captivating, well designed and written, and incredibly bingeable. I listened pretty out of order but still got a lot out of it. Truly lovely people making a great show, can’t wait to see what’s next!!

A new favorite

I binged all of the Juno Steel arc first, but wanted to wait until I finished the Second Citadel to leave a review. Naturally, I chewed through the whole backlog of Second Citadel in a week. It’s very good, folks! This show has made me laugh out loud and cry out loud and actually, literally jump up and down with joy and excitement. With my body. In the material plane. It’s that good. I would recommend this a million times over! If you haven’t given it a listen yet, please, please do. You won’t regret it.

My all time favorite podcast

Genuinely my all time favorite podcast. I love it. I love both of the main stories. I love that I can get gays in space AND fantasy gays in one rad podcast. The standalones in the first season were fun and very twilight zone. Gay noir in space is like, the ideal genre.

A top 3!

There are a handful of stand-alone stories, but the two primary ones are a medieval-adjacent fantasy featuring knights facing monsters and a scifi detective noir story. Good breadth, and all the stories are fun and interesting, the characters endearing. Really excellent dialogue and genre play.
