Most musicians would love to have a moment that defined their career. A moment when they find something that sets them apart and pushes them forward into unknown territory. If, as an artist, you’re lucky enough to have that moment, we - as the listening public - can only hope somebody was there to press record. If that moment exists in a song, we want to hear every bit of it. But what about what came before. And after. This season on “The Jump”, acclaimed singer / songwriter Shirley Manson (Garbage) sits down with seven of the most influential musicians of the last two decades (Neko Case, Esperanza Spalding, Big Boi, Dave 1, Courtney love, Karen O and Perfume Genius) to discuss the song that represents their artistic moment of truth and the impact that song had on both their careers, and their lives.

Shirley Manson so much Love!!!

Garbage has been my favorite band for 35 years. I had the pleasure of meeting them and totally fab girled our when I met Shirley. She was my childhood hero and her music touched me in so many ways. The fact shes doing this podcast is amazing. Her interviews are deep and make me truly appreciate all the artists she gets to talk to. Love you Shirley!

Conversation GOLD!

Well yes, they could be longer BUT I love hearing about different musicians and their “ process “ of song writing and the attitude of the music, she’s a fantastic musician herself and love the podcast

Really great interviews with some really interesting artists. I love how intimate the conversation are. I echo what many have said, I wish the interviews were longer... the “jump” song is a great starting point, there is so much more I’d love to hear!

Swoon!

I totally binged her entire series. Such vulnerable, honest, and disarming conversations (Shirley is a FANTASTIC interviewer, BTW).

Fascinating Show, Perfect Host

I found The Jump because I’m both a massive Shirley Manson/Garbage fan but also because I’m a massive Song Exploder fan, too (even bought the t-shirt!).As expected, Shirley’s down-to-earthness really connects with her interviewees and to me as a listener. To get a weekly dose of her voice, and her incredible laugh, is a true gift.I’m excited for the new music I’ve heard about, as well. I’ve already investigated a few of her guests and really love their work. It’s always special to find new music, and to have it be facilitated by someone you love is just icing on the cake.My only suggestion is to play the song in full at the end of the episode so we can get to hear it in all its glory. I understand that might be a bit too on the nose of Song Exploder’s format, however it’s something I’ve been thinking each time I finish an episode.Anyway, keep up the great work, Shirley. I love getting to hear you each week, it’s like a small window into your interests and life too, especially talking with other women artists. So inspirational and powerful, I’m thankful you’ve been active all these years and you’ve brought me such joy and comfort in your beautiful voice and lyrics. This Darkling thanks you and The Boys! 💕

This podcast is a joy.

Because Shirley Ann Manson has best-friend-sparkle-powder she sprinkles on her interviewees, each episode is captivating or at the very least strewn with gems. I’m not even into some of these artists, but that has no bearing on what a pleasure it is to listen to each one. Plus, Shirley’s voice and laugh are the life-affirming defibrillators we need.Christ on a crutch it’s good to listen to this.
