Astute Hosts

I listen to the podcast on my daily walks. I am currently writing my autobiography and find the use of Joseph Campbell in their film reviews extremely useful. I also rewatch the films covered. The Hero’s Journey is now my favorite podcast.

Absolutely fantastic podcast

As someone who loves cinema and books, the breakdown of these movies and books is something to marvel and thoroughly enjoy. I can’t think of any other way to describe it other than to only say that I just absolutely love this podcast!

Love this podcast!

As a former librarian who read Joseph Campbell’s opus in library science school, I cannot help but see all narratives through this archetypal filter. An absolutely can’t stop listening podcast! Please cover Almost Famous!

Friends they don’t know about

I love this pod! It’s like I have these two funny, very bright friends that I sit around with and talk movies. ( only they can’t hear me).

A Journey Worthy of a Hero

I was thinking a lot recently about the hero’s journey and thinking how fun it would be to make a podcast that just went through the hero’s journey of different novels and movies. Then I searched it on iTunes and found out that it already existed and it’s awesome! I binged the sh*# out of it. The long term friendship of Jeff and Dan lends delightful chemistry to their serious rumination on where the elements of the journey manifest in films like Alien and The Rock. It’s an academic look at fun stories which is genuinely fun! It’s a fun exercise and it’s fun to listen to two cool dudes going through it together with their material related booze of the month. The bag riffle alone is worth the listen!

It's really good.

Full disclosure: I have known these two since junior high and they are two of the best friends, however I will not let my disdain for them taint this review. This podcast is an amazing way to reexamine movies and books that you likely already enjoy without realizing why you enjoyed them. Jeff and Dan really take their time analyzing and breaking down the different steps and how they feel the journey is integrated into the story. If you have any interest in the breaking down the formula that creates mass popular culture than this podcast is a must.It also doesn't hurt that these two are funny and know eachother so well that the reparte between them is fun and natural. Even if you have no interest in the subject you can enjoy their passionate defenses of their opinions and their reviews of the adult beverage that is consumed in each episode (chosen because the beverage type or name is somehow realted to the topic movie/book). Check out the episodes about The Shawshank Redemption and The Rock as good indcators to see if the show is for you. Then go back and listen to them all, because you're gonna' like it. It's really good. Also, their production of this podcast is really screwing up our regular D&D game so please make it worth out gaming inconvenience and tell a friend.

Awesome

I’ve been looking for a podcast just like this. The only bad thing I can say is there needs to be more episodes. Just wonderful.

If High school English class was actually fun...

I love revisiting some of my favorite stories with this podcast. Jeff and Dan expertly analyze the stories through the eye of the heroes journey with insight and humor. I wish my lit classes in college could have been as entertaining, and with alcohol! I look forward to the podcast every month, I wish they did more of them! I loved the American President episode - my favorite movie of all time.

Reveals new layers of your favorite movies

The Hero’s Journey is one of the most important psychological systems to be discovered. Applied in this podcast to study films, it let’s us find new dimensions of our favorite stories. I especially like how the co-hosts bring different perspectives to the analysis. Equal parts fun and insightful, I definitely recommend this podcast.

Fall in love with Die Hard, all over again

I just love this kind of breakdown. The Field of Dreams episode broke me, trapped in a plane to Seattle, weeping dumb tears of dumb joy like a giant baby. I can't wait to see what they take apart next.
