Top quality

Yall — i started listening to this because i dont play dnd and literally was only in it for the goofs but i have found so much more in this podcast. This is the equivalent of several bookcases in a library of narrative and character development. This is no small thing. I work night shift alone so i have legitimately EIGHT HOURS to kill and this podcast has never once disappointed me. Sounds crazy, i know, but i enjoy every hour i’ve listened to this podcast. I was very pleasantly surprised when they included LGBT characters and commercials for more podcasts with LGBT content. As a member of the community it warms my heart that three white guys can open up the door for other people a little bit more. Keep up the excellent work and accidental activism. ♥️

Pretty Dope

Great story telling. You can tell the the narrator and DM puts a lot of time into all of this. Thoroughly engaging. Tiny bit cringy with some of the “sup babe” relationship stuff and that’s really the only complaint. These guys are hilarious and wildly quick witted.

New Arc Not Worth Your Time

With so many fantastic actual play podcasts out there, I can’t recommend spending time on the aggressively mediocre newest arc, Graduation. Despite the McElroy’s consistent inability in all of the three main arcs to create villains with interesting or in any way compelling motivations beyond being bog-standard “primordial darknesses that corrupt people and want to destroy the world” and their one dimensional main characters, the combination of humor, interesting worldbuilding, and moments of legitimate pathos and interesting side-characters made the first two arcs worth listening to.Four episodes in, the Graduation Arc has none of these, and no stakes have been established that make me want to keep listening to find out what happens. All of the flaws in The Adventure Zone have become more glaring, and all of the strengths are nowhere to be seen. Listen to Friends At Table, listen to the excellent first arc of Campaign and the very good second arc (Skyjacks), listen to FunCity, even listen to the Amnesty or Balance arcs (both of which were very good despite their flaws.) Listening to four middle-aged, straight, cis, white, men stumble their way through a ploddingly paced, badly acted, and utterly pedestrian fantasy college AU is four hours of my life I desperately wish I could get back.

Excellent Storytelling

The McElroys are hilarious and TAZ is evidence of their excellent storytelling abilites.

Not a fan of Justin’s character voice nor Travis’ character choices. That baby unicorn scene was much too. . . cringe isn’t the right word. Lame?? It was lame.

Beyond amazing

It’s funny, and uplifting, and warm, and real. I’ve laughed and cried more than is reasonable by any measure, and it’s 100% worth the time to listen from the very beginning. More than anything, Griffin is a master storyteller. He loves his story, you can tell; the latter third of the Balance campaign is just overflowing with his love for the characters and storyline and his family’s ridiculous wonderful avatars. Griffin, on the off chance you read this: I’ve started writing again, after years, thanks to you. Thank you.

Always laughing!

It doesn’t matter what game they’re in, it brings a hilarious but intricate game to life for those who are listening. I’m always excited to see what happens next, and am never disappointed. It’s definitely a unique experience!

Even at my lowest point, this podcast can lift my spirits and give me that little push to keep going. Thank you Mcelroys, your work means more to me than I can put in words. Thank you for the light in my life.

D and D as an art form

Love this cast more than 2/4 of my kids. The first and third “seasons” are amazing. The second lost my attention, but there has never been a better podcast than season 1, and so far season three is glorious.

The BEST

When this family gathers around a mic hilarity inevitably ensues. I have literally bellowed out loud when one of Taako’s spells go awry, gasped as Magnus just flipping rushes in AGAIN, and face palmed when Merle fabricates spell slots he doesn’t even have. My housemates can always tell when I’m listening to TAZ, because I cannot help but LOL. The story is rich, the characters are lively and endearing. So do yourself a solid and gives these fellas a go.

My favorite media to consume tbh

I just don’t think I’ll ever get over Amnesty- it’s so much my jam it’s not even funny? Crypto’s, aliens, family, and other interesting themes?? In MY available podcasts? It’s more likely than you think! These boys bring so much to each and every episode. Can’t wait to see what Travis has planned for this season!

Re-Review: They’ve Lost It

I’m sad to say that the Family has lost me as a listener. The new concept is not good. Bring Griffin back as DM, and we can talk. The lack of seriousness in terms of world-building and naming conventions is simply bad. Stop trying to create new merch and create good content (as you have been for years).

my favorite podcast

I’ve been listening since the summer before I started college and let me tell you it’s one of my favorite things about college. I listen on my way to class, during lunch, and it even motivates me to work out, because I listen to it during my workouts too! It’s such a gem of a podcast with such a lovely, hilarious, and considerate family. If you need a laugh, or a cry, or a place that feels a little like the kind of home that makes you feel cozy and safe - I highly recommend The Adventure Zone
