Asking great questions

He’s a great interviewer asking interesting questions to smart people. Each episode I listen to has opened my mind a little more, and taught me a lot.

Sexual harassment still supported in physics

I’ve listened to many episodes. I appreciate Sean’s patient explanations. I won’t criticize his unconventional views on quantum physics because, as he points out, the fundamentals should always be questioned. What killed it for me was when I went back to listen to the original show intro. He tried to illustrate that people have differing perspectives. He could not have used a worse example: he pointed out how there are many women in physics who endure sexual harassment, and if they speak up, their careers can be ruined. He mentions how on the other side, the men accused stand to be demoted or otherwise inconvenienced. Then Sean goes on to say “There’s no wrong or right here, just differing perspectives”. He could have used one of countless scientific debates to illustrate his point. Why did he have to insult women by being so dismissive of such a tremendously significant human rights issue.

Just depends on the episode

Sean Carroll is always a sure bet. But I made the mistake of listening to episode 96 with Lina Nacib. I’m sure she is brilliant and accomplished but has the worst high pitch shrieking voice, also terrible at presenting, all over the place, she starts a sentence and jumps all over, really difficult to follow. Ruined the episode, even though dark matter is one of the most fascinating topic in physics. Her presentation is so distracting I had to stop and was prompted to write this review. Will have to skip this episode, it’s so abrasive. Careful who you invite, Sean.

A keeper

I thank you sir for an always thought provoking podcast. And I’m sure others would agree you are a great host, a good listener and that you always ask the right questions. Humility is a wonderful trait in a scientist and you embody that. Thanks again sean

Sean Carroll is a great host

Probably one of the best science communicators around at the moment. Great chats with his guests, always respectful and asking interesting questions without letting people off the hook when he disagrees. He truly is a refreshing voice in physics, and very down to Earth.

Just Great!

Sean Carroll is a great host. He listens carefully to guests and asks probing questions without arguing - even when you know he thoroughly disagrees. He appears to have nothing personal at stake with being right or wrong; his interest is purely in the ideas.

Economics

Hello Sean I’m a huge fan of the many topics that is spoken on this podcast. I’m an inspiring philosopher that hopes to attend a university one day. I was interested in your 84 episode about economics with Suresh Naidu and was disappointed on his take on Automation/AI. I would highly consider inviting Andrew Yang to your podcast to speak more about economics and the reality of Automation. I hope you consider inviting Andrew as I believe he will change your views on the economy and the future of work. He is starting his own podcast soon.

All negative reviews are from IDW Cult

This is the best podcast of any genre, period. Sean should have known better than to take on the anti-intellectual podcast right in even one episode which resulted in every negative review here. Wonder what that gang is doing with itself in the wake of Rohan’s Sanders endorsement.

Big Picture

Mindscape is one of my two favorite podcasts. Lots of people have talked about a need for an interdisciplinary understanding of humanities place in the universe, but the interdisciplinary aspect is usually shallow and aspirational at best. Mindscape actually delivers. To here a person who is trying to articulate the “foundations” of reality integrate the perspective and ideas into every topic, including topics that are about everyday human activities. Sean Carrol true big picture thinker.

One of my favorite science-focused interview style podcasts

I’ve been a listener of Mindscape since the old brain logo days and I have to say Sean continues to improve the show and bring knowledgeable guests to the Mindscape audience. It’s Physics and Quantum world leaning but not overly so, with a good mix of popular culture topics (like wine, music) and other science topics, such as the new origin and search for life theme for 2020. Sean, if you’re reading, get Nick Lane on the show to talk about the origins of life. Love his work, particularly his more recent book The Vital Question, and I think it would mesh well with the life theme you recently queued up for the new year. Keep up the great work!Jim FrankPittsburgh, PA

Daniel Dennett still struggles to even talk about consciousness

Sean Carrol, according to himself, subscribers to Daniel Dennett’s ideas. That is unfortunate. Daniel Dennett simply represents a dogmatic scientific view and clearly he has gotten worse now in older age. Terence McKenna once said about his book “Conciseness explained” should be titled “Conciseness explained away’. Dear Sean Carrol, please interview forward thinking scientists such as Donald Hoffman.

Science Episodes Are The Best

A really great podcast. The science-based ones are the best; fascinating and educational. I find the philosophy ones to be tedious navel gazing but I suspect most will find these interesting too. The BBC’s “In Our Time” really sets the standard for this kind of content. They don’t post as much anymore so it’s great to have another podcast as interesting to listen to.

Ever since Sam Harris put his podcast behind a paywall, I’ve started listening to Mindscape, and it’s been very enjoyable and informative. I highly recommend it.
