Fun, Funny, and Knowledgable!

This podcast is always a delight to listen to. Ally and his guests have thoughtful, interesting opinions on the films they cover, and I always learn something unexpected about Russian culture and/or history. This podcast has also introduced me to a number of films that I might not have been aware of or thought to watch - but that turned out to be fantastic! Looking forward to many more episodes.

Поехали!

This show is truly a gem — it consistently hits that difficult balance between warmth and intellectual engagement. Before the film discussion, Ally briefly interviews the guest, and this usually goes in interesting, unexpected directions, like a review of a more recent film or a discussion of expat life in St. Petersburg. I really appreciate the extensive Soviet coverage, and I hope this show has a very long life, indeed. Keep it up!

I Love This Podcast!

This is an engaging and insightful podcast about Russian and Soviet films or films with a connection to Russia. It's a pleasure to listen to Ally and his guests talk about the films, and often Ally provides additional context due to his background as someone who has lived in Russia. Because of this podcast, my list of films to watch has grown exponentially, but I look forward to watching more Russian films!

Perfect for both Cineastes and Russophiles alike

Ally and his various cohosts explore both Russian (mostly Soviet) cinema as well as other films from around the world that share a Russian connection of some sort. Ally sometimes helps give some cultural context (Russian traditions and aspects of communication for example) that will be of indispensable use to the listener eager to expand their understanding of a particular film and or filmmaker. And Ally also picks good guests when it comes to dissecting the construction and quality of the movies that are spotlighted. Overall the show is engaging, informative and fun as well. An intelligent film podcast that I definitely would recommend.

My language skills are a little ruski

But this show is a fun time. Ally is warm and fun, and his appreciation of Russian culture and film is contagious. You’ll get both Russian-made films, and plenty of outside looks at the culture from other countries.

Enlightening and Entertaining

Each episode Ally and a guest review a film that is either Russian made or has some connection with Russia. The guests will sometimes share interesting observations based upon their own backgrounds. The episode featuring the film “Brat” had a fascinating discussion about Russian gangs and tattoo meanings. Whenever Ally is joined by Carrie, you know there will be a lot of laughs. This podcast has helped me relate with new acquaintances that are Russian ex-pats. Thanks for the podcast.
