    Squid Fane review

I follow quite closely Pop Culture Happy Hour. It is my favorite podcast while I walk. Sometimes I even stop walking and I write down their suggestions. I was most struck by their review of Squid Game. It truly resonated with me : I tried to watch something inconsequential before going to sleep; but still the segment(s) crept in my dreams. And the characters and their morals follow me during the day. I agreed with almost everything the hosts said. And I hope they do not have a sequel. I will not watch it for sure!Anyhow, I love your podcast. Thumbs up!( by the way, I am 76!)

    I would have unsubbed, but…

Glen and Latesha Harris are actually worth wading thru all the overwrought, snooty takes of the other hosts. PLEASE more Glen and Latesha!!!

    Changing a little too much

Sadly, this used to be my favorite podcast but I cannot listen anymore. It used to be the ultimate comfort food. I trusted Glenn, Linda, and Stephen (and a great cast of rotating guests) to give reviews that made sense. I loved when the Aisha Harris came on. But this podcast can’t be comfort food with so many random people on it. I have drifted away since I never know what to expect going into an episode, and that’s exhausting. I wish npr had kept this podcast the same and added a second show where a bunch of random people could come on. Or I wish Linda would make a new podcast, she’s my absolute favorite. Very sad to have my favorite podcast changed beyond recognition.

    Love NPR

Thanks for all you do. Love this little podcast. Sometimes y’all are a bitttttt cerebral with the takes but I still love you. I really appreciate when you bring on guests with new and unique perspectives. I also agree with the reviewers praising Aisha! She’s a great addition.

    Star-crossed

I only discovered Kacey Musgrave last week based on an interview she had on NPR. I really enjoyed the album as I thought she a great songwriter who turned a sad part of her life into an album of “growth”. I’m black, female and a new Mom (long time wifey) but the discussion of the album was surprisingly disappointing. I ended up listening to The Ringer’s review that was more balanced. PCHH seemed like they were expecting more and just wanted to rant that they didn’t get another “Golden Hour” single.

Just not the same as it used to be

This was my first Podcast I ever subscribed to. I’ve listened since the beginning, and finally had to unfollow today. I’m just tired of every movie/tv show/award show/album being politicized and made to be an in depth look into race, or lgbtq+, or sex, or . It’s become less of a happy hour and more of a 15 minute session of putting a piece under the microscope and telling us what the makers didn’t get right in terms of social issues. I liked it much better when it was about the actual piece and not how it does or does not fit into a political narrative.

    Interesting takes but

A bit too worried about how they think things should be socially ie number and types of black people, all whites are a problem like pushing white privilege and white power. It’s a bit much.

    too pious

Hard to listen to, I had to unfollow. Panelists’ self-righteousness overwhelms their treatment of the texts time and again. And it’s the exact same critique that gets applied to everything. After BBC’s Saturday Review went down as a COVID casualty, I really wanted this show to work for me, but it’s an exhausting bore :(

    Only for young listeners now

Don’t like the short, daily format and am driven insane by hearing so very many of the newer, younger commentators say LIKE every other word. Used to listen often but now seldom do. Simply can’t stand it.

    Frustrated longtime listener

I’ve loved PCHH for many years, but the new structure of the show is making it quite unappealing. Linda, Aisha, etc. are great - nothing but respect - but some of these guest hosts are brutal… being negative about everything is not interesting criticism. Calling something “problematic” without unpacking further is a meaningless observation. Not every piece of culture has to be a meditation on race, class, gender, etc. Some things can just be. This show was a lot smarter and more fun when it recognized that.

    Mondello the mansplainer

Bob Mondello has only one mode: mansplainer. His view is the universal view, his opinion is truth, and he doesn’t need to learn anything new or question his assumption because he’s just the smartest guy in the room. He really makes the entire show almost insufferable.

    Pretentious

Not as in touch with pop culture as they think, less in what they review and more in how they review it. Too many reviews that lean too heavily on weird personal biases and not enough that actually feel like they’re by an informed critic.

    So ~broad~

I like this podcast for keeping me up to date with shows music movies etc but sometimes the hosts are sooooo negative. How do you critique shrek so harshly?? it’s a children’s movie. They can also be so pretentious when reviewing something like perhaps it wasn’t meant to be so serious. In addition the word broad is used WAY too much. Come up with a new word please.

    Ode to regular hosts

I loved PCHH BUT…I miss the regular hosts. The banter between folks I know is far superior to a rolling group of unknowns who have no chemistry. There is a reason they are called hosts and not guests. Your listeners learn to appreciate and anticipate fun with consistent hosts. One new chair per episode is plenty. And bring back longer yet fewer episodes. It seems you have accommodated the hosts’ schedules rather then the listeners’ enjoyment. Chemistry is important to movie characters, no? Same with podcast hosts. Love you but hope you will take this constructive criticism.
