Make It Awkward Podcast is a new podcast talking about uncomfortable things. Dani had this idea for a podcast several months before Denny passed away and now she has a platform to do it. She is bringing along Denny’s best friend Thom as they attempt to make awkward things easier to talk about. Dani will answer questions from followers about her journey through widowhood, losing her husband to suicide, and now being a single mom of kids who have dealt with a lot of trauma. They will have guests on most weeks who come to answer the most awkward questions about their own life situation, job, family, trauma, etc. While the topics discussed may be of a more serious nature, they hope to bring a lightheartedness to tough things and make it okay to laugh about how hard life can be.Dani Bates was widowed by suicide in 2019. Her husband, Denny, was 35 when he took his life. She has two little girls ages 3 (Winnie) and 1 (Piper). She loves to sew and write and is passionate about suicide prevention and mental health awareness.Thom was Denny’s best friend of 15 years. He has a wife, Chelce, who is currently pregnant with their third child. They also have a son, age 5 (Lincoln); and a daughter, age 3 (Nora). Thom loves to grill and barbecue and make inappropriate jokes.

Dani and Tom are the greatest!

You guys are awesome, you don’t even know it but you’ve helped me through a very hard time. I feel like I’m a lot like Denny, I actually feel somewhat connected with him on a mental and physical level, physical because I too am extremely short, lol. I’ve struggled a lot with anxiety and depression through out my life. I find the way I handle things are similar to how Denny did in those last two days as you described. I just felt the need to let you both know that you have definitely helped me, I’ve never listened to a pod cast before, I had seen Winnie’s viral Facebook video a while back and her reaction was imbedded in my head, I imagine my son in that position and I just can’t bare it. I don’t want to ramble, I could go on and on. To sum it up, I love listening to you guys, I find myself smiling, sometimes sad and a lot of the time laughing. You guys are doing such a good job and you’re helping this broken soul navigate through a very hard time. Thank you, so, so very much.

Refreshingly open, honest, and awkward in all the best ways

What’s the best way to make a taboo subject not taboo? Talking about it, of course! A lot of the time we attempt protect ourselves by hiding our feelings of thoughts especially with hard situations and not speak up about them. But that can create more problems, and even lead to unfortunate consequences. Dani and Thom have the rare gift of being able to openly speak about touchy, uncomfortable, and awkward subjects in a very approachable way, breaking down walls and stigmas, and healing hearts and minds. Keep it up, you two!

Thank you!

Thank you for talking about this. I only wish more people made it awkward! As a person who’s attempted suicide in my past I can’t thank people like you for making it awkward and helping break the mental health stigma. I love your podcast so far. Keep doing amazing things! Your going to help so many people. ❤️
