Deep dives into interesting topics with academics

Each episode delves deep into a specific topic, I’m partial to the history of science area but philosophy, history, art, and literature are also very good. It’s a host and several academics having a chat for which they’ve all prepared very well. There’s virtually no wasted chatter so I listen to this when I know I can focus ( or the topic is just too compelling).

Rudest presenter

While I love the format of this podcast, and the wide variety of topics presented, I will sadly delete this from my cache. Melvyn Bragg’s continual interruptions of the subject matter experts brought on the show is beyond rude. Why even bother, since he apparently knows more about these topics that they have spent years of their lives researching. I had to give up after listening to the first few minutes of “the siege of Malta” and hearing Melvyn talk over the speaker about 5 times within 30 seconds. Maybe it’s time for a new presenter...

Simply brilliant!

I have listened to many IOT broadcasts. Whatever the topic they are interesting and engaging. I’ve never been disappointed. A wonderful idea brilliantly executed all the time.

such a special show

I like how the guests and the host are working TOGETHER, not fighting with each other. Wish all of cable TV news worked like that

Good discussions!

An entertaining podcast with interesting, learned people who talk about historical subjects. Sound quality is great and the show is witty with a touch of amusing british academic dryness.

and you thought you knew history

Love this podcast for Melvin Bragg. He’s not only knows his stuff but his banter with guests has me in stitches. Some of the history may seem obscure nevertheless it pulls you in and hooks you. I listen to them twice sometimes three times so I don’t miss anything. Then I go do some of my own independent research for fun.

Why Put Repeats in the Main Feed?

I've got a perfectly good app for managing podcasts so I don't need you to put repeats in the feed. Yet another BBC podcast that I've unsubscribed from because of the way they treat listeners.

The best podcast of its kind (by far) that I have come across. Bragg is an old pro and the guests (yes, real academics) are of a very high quality

Best show ever

Best show ever! They delve into a subject head on without any of the usual let’s talk about ourselves first, our pet peeves, our glorious achievements, and how we came to this subject in the first place. Me me me!It is totally the opposite of most shows. Each invited guest takes turns to answer a question on a given subject and does not get interrupted. It’s clear, precise and extremely charming. I also listen to the philosophy one.

Learn something new

Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with Melvyn and his guests as they discuss topics you didn’t know were so interesting. In-depth, academic, and often funny (the gin episode is a highlight!). Go ahead, learn something new.

Nerve wracking

I started with the Frankenstein episode. While the guests were very knowledgeable Melvyn’s constant interjections were so distracting. It was like I was listening to a game show where the “contestants” have 20 seconds to nervously share their knowledge before they are interrupted. It was not a pleasant listening experience.

Well conducted

A brilliant series. One I keep coming back to, to relisten to. I disagree with the reviews that criticise Melvyn Bragg’s conducting in these podcasts. I think he keeps them moving through the topics well, knowing there is only 45 minutes to cover a lot of material. He also interrupts the speakers at appropriate times to clarify in layman’s terms when the experts get too technical. Keep up the good work.

Astonishing program

This is my favourite podcast. Fascinating stories and terrific experts grilled by Melvin Bragg in what is sometimes uncomfortable but always entertaining!

New host pls

Nothing like an old white dude consistently interrupting the female experts. Would be much more tolerable with a new, less misogynistic host!

Dangerous

I write this review shortly after discovering this series. The subjects cover everything from Free Will to solar winds. As I write this, the Covid virus has reached my small, lonely prairie city. I am unaware of closures, health notices, and travel protocols as I’ve stopped listening to the news because I’m too busy listening to this podcast! Darn you Melvyn, darn you to heck!

Podcast Gold

I think to really enjoy this life it’s worth engaging with things of value - like expert knowledge of our historical origins; science, culture and art. MB cleverly facilitates the discussion by getting to the crux of what you want and need to hear. It’s pretty apparent he’s also knowledgeable about many topics and I’m sure this is part of his skill as presenter. His character quirks make the show and he never braggs [laughter] Podcast gold.
