A history podcast with a twist: Friendly Fire uses war movies as a point of entry on not only the history of war, but the history of how societies think about war. John Roderick, Adam Pranica and Benjamin Ahr Harrison dissect movies from throughout the history of cinema, talk about film production, pedantic quibbles with costumes and airplanes, and keep you laughing the entire time.

Smart & Cultural

I very much like the intros, the humour, the smart cultural expositions, and the way the pod accumulates. Very good premise for this kind of show.

Possibly my favorite podcast

I’m probably not this show’s target demographic (19 and female) but this is a fantastic podcast. The most recent episode sums it up best- it’s a show about humanizing people from the past (and admiring uniforms and trains).

Pretty good. I don’t like war movies but I love Ben & Adam (via Greatest Gen) and I like taking deep analytical dives into media, so for a while I was really enjoying this podcast! The more I listen to the back catalog though, the more I wish Ben & Adam got to talk more. Roderick has a lot to contribute, but I get a little sick of his long monologues... we’re here to discuss the movie, and while some historical context is welcome, he often goes way overboard, spending minutes lecturing while Ben & Adam listen politely. I love the irreverent give & take between Ben & Adam on GG, where neither is afraid to interrupt or tease the other. The power and airtime imbalance on this show gets irritating if I listen to too many episodes in a row.

Fun, thought provoking discussion.

I really enjoy this podcast. The hosts have fun, thought provoking discussion of “War” movies throughout the decades. They try to get both the context of the time the films were made and the craft of film making.

One of the great podcasts

I know two of these guys from their Star Trek podcasts (which I love). Such a treat to hear them with their friend John Roderick with this different subject matter. I was always a little bit of a war movie fan, but this podcast cements and enhances that predilection, and exposes me to a much deeper trove of titles than I would have sought out myself. Funny and irreverent, but also often thoughtful and insightful, with observations that could tell us a lot about ourselves, viewed through the war-movie lens. Would recommend.

One of the Greats

Ben and Adam are just as good as they always are on The Greatest Generation (a Star Trek pod) and I enjoy listening to them but what I am truly thankful for is that this podcast introduced me to John Roderick. A man who on paper I should not enjoy and yet he has become one of my favorite Internet personalities. The things that I would’ve assumed would make me not like him.... make me love him. What the hell is that? A man who can be both incredibly profound and then hilariously pedantic in the same breath. The man is an enigma. A wonderfully intelligent, thought-provoking, incredibly frustrating enigma. He needs to be studied.

Great a Podcast about War Films

I really enjoy listening to these guys discuss war films, and their humor while reviewing them. This podcast is comprehensive and covers all aspects of the film, including production notes, directors/producers, actors and historical errors. Each one of these guys brings a unique perspective to each film and break down each film extremely well. Highly recommended.

John Roderick lives in my head

The chemistry between these three men - two pasty nerds and a hirsute renaissance wizard - is what keeps me coming back to a podcast about movies I’ve never seen. I look forward to this every week and also support them for the Porkchop episode. I suggest you do the same if you like this as much as I do.

Mostly well meaning...

I came by way of Greatest Gen, so at first I thought John Roderick was pretty hard to take. He still is, but it’s still a great podcast that has become my utter favorite, partly because he pulls Ben and Adam down to his level of weirdly palatable gravitas.
