LOVE

Entertaining, smart, and edgy. I am always entertained when I tune in, and also love having something that is intelligent and elevated to listen to in our shallow world of reality TV and superficiality. I feel like I’m back in my favorite AP English Lit class using my brain. Em is the best and she also facilitates talking with the best. ❤️❤️

Love books? Love trashing f*ck boys?

Then this is 100% your place. Imagine all the sassy remarks you had about Ron Weasley or Darcy in high school during Lit class (or AP lit if you were that b*tch) and you’ll find them here, and then some.

Fun and Feminist AF

This is hands-down one of the best new podcasts of 2019. It’s like eavesdropping on a hilarious book club where everyone is about 1.5 drinks in. FBoL is such a joy and has such thoughtful and honest discussions, all facilitated by Emily, who is a stellar host. Whether you’ve studied a ton of English Lit or just casually like books and pop culture, this podcast is the perfect mix of literary analysis and irreverent fun. Start with the Twilight, Jane Eyre or (ahem) the Greek mythology episodes.

Superb commentary

"Call Me by Your Name" was such an outstanding in-depth episode with great commentary by the host and guest. It made the listener feel alive in the story. I just bought the book, the audio version, and became a Patreon of this podcast. Yay FBoL.

Great pod.

I found this pod from a friend who is in my English program at school. It is such a great podcast. As an English major it’s great to explore all the a-holes of literature with the host(s).

Leave Ron Alone! 🤣

This is really just only okay for me. I was super excited about this because the premise of this podcast is SO great but the execution is lacking. A few of the episodes covered books that I haven’t read in a long time so I thought it would be nice to rehash it through their perspective or see if there were moments that I thought the same thing too or they brought little nuances to light for me. A couple of the shows I listened to I felt that the details they were discussing were just a little off but wasn’t sure because it had been so long since I’d read it. Then the Ron Weasley episode happened. There were definitely details that they got wrong and it seemed like the guest hadn’t read the books and maybe just watched the movies so was instead analyzing the movies and not the books. They give these kids a lot of crap for not being emotionally mature when they’re pre-teens and teenagers. There are A LOT of reasons that Ron is a F*ck Boy but cut him some slack, everyone has been a teenager that did something dumb to get the person they secretly like to like them back. They treat that whole situation like it’s the worst thing possible when come on, it’s just teenagers being teenagers and figuring out how to navigate those kinds of relationships. Who you are as a teenager is not who you are forever. Eventually I just turned that episode off. In the end I’ll still subscribe but probably only listen when I’m out of other shows to listen to

Absolute delight

This podcast is my favorite to listen to each week and now the addition of Emily reading short scary stories on Friday?! I mean, come on! It’s so fun to hear classic characters be put in their place.

In the words of Mr. Darcy, "It Rules"

Emily is at once a top tier smartie pants and a totally relatable bud giving you the dirt on your fave problematic lit bois as well as those you've been avoiding (with good reason)! Fantastic guests, deep dives you won't get from your lit prof, and it's wildly funny. It's got everything. Listen already!!!
