Excellent deep dives; an aural archive
Tori Amos is one of the most underrated geniuses of the music industry, and I love that this podcast takes up the task of collecting the historical evidence for her greatness. I especially appreciate the weight given to the evolution of her songs in live performance. In mid-2018, they mentioned an effort to bring more women’s voices in the analysis, which I hope they continue to do: the exclusion of women’s perspectives from some of the deep dives is the only real problem I have with the show. Not that their experiences and readings aren’t wonderful and valid, but there is rarely any engagement with the themes of sexual violence, for example, that are prevalent in Tori’s work. I appreciate that more voices and perspectives are brought in the longer the show goes on, though.
