Dead Rock Stars is a new, enlightening yet wholly amusing podcast presented by former Classic Rock editor and star Kerrang! writer Mick Wall and Metal Hammer and The Quietus regular Joel McIver. Between them, these two rock writers have written over fifty books on music and contributed to dozens of publications. The new podcast, produced by 7digital – whose resumé includes Bruce Dickinson’s Rock Show and Radcliffe And Maconie for BBC 6 Music radio show – celebrates Wall and McIver’s combined decades of experience in rock writing and has the stated objective of revealing to listeners exactly what a particular deceased rocker was like in the flesh.

About As Much Fun As You Can Have With Morbidity

Hosts Wall and McKiver know their stuff. Initially, I listened to eps related to artists that I already knew well. Then, having enjoyed those, I listened to the rest. And I’ve come to appreciate every artist they’ve discussed. That’s how contagious their enthusiasm is. We need more! Bring on season 2.

Fun and interesting

I love this podcast! Mick and Joel know their stuff, they inject humor and yet remain respectful to the subjects of each episode, but I think my favorite bits are Mick’s personal stories and anecdotes from his many interactions with all of these rock legends! So much fun!

Long live dead rock stars

Mick and Joel have great chemistry and a depth of knowledge other music pods can only dream of. Heard about this one when a clip was played on The Album Club. That and the AC endorsement was enough for me to binge the season in a few days time. Would love to hear episodes about Steve Marriott, Mick Ronson and Rory Gallagher to name a few. The Bowie and Bolan episodes are standouts. Good blend of history and humor. When do we get more?

Chewy, chewy.

Stop chewing food. Can you record a 40 minute podcast without eating? This show is definitely entertaining, but I can’t take the chewing on mic. I’ll check back periodically to see if snack time has ended.

Extraordinarily Intelligent Work

The episode on Sandy Denny was one of the best of its kind I’ve heard. It was a deeply personal and perceptive discussion of an artist still relevant 40 years after her passing, and which did a nice job of explaining why her work will be relevant in another 40 years. This led me to subscribe and listen to other episodes and I have yet to be disappointed. The hosts manage to bring fresh thoughts and opinions to artists and subjects which have in some cases been discussed for 50 years. A considerable achievement and in light of the underlying subject matter always presented in a tasteful and respectful manner. And while respectful I am impressed the hosts avoid hagiography. They are willing to say what needs to be said, including when necessary being critical. Critical, but never mean or petty.
