Amazing Podcast, Hope it’s not Dead

This is a gripping podcast that is an abundance of content in each episode. Dan does a brilliant job of telling these stories, the only issue is he stopped making them. I hope it comes back, it was the best out there.

    Apologist Nightmare

I listened to several episodes, I really wanted to give it a chance, since it was highly recommended- but I just couldn’t get past the continual justification of atrocities because “it was the norm.” I realize that he is making an honest effort, I’d give credit in circumstances when this is true, but most of the time he was outright wrong, and ignoring significant political and social events in the times in question. There is no attribution to any research for his arguments, be it primary, secondary, physical, or academic research at all, making the whole thing come across as what is is… a privileged white guy talking about history through his perspective for the same audience with a sickeningly apologist tint. I don’t think Carlin is intending to be oblivious, his is just too blinded by his world view to describe history in any other way.

Dan Carlin uses a new medium to explore topics from ancient history to 20th century industrialized warfare uncovering the human condition behind the politics and context of history of the times using metaphors and analogy to give listeners a reference point sometimes he meander but occasionally he gets going on a thread that either shocks or informs you would recommend

    History with the Right Filter

Dan says he’s not a historian “but a fan of history” constantly but a more accurate statement to ME would be that he’s a historian without the restrictions of a specific institution. He gives you the very specific, and much needed, ‘human view’ of history. Something that very few academic history classes have provided ME PERSONALLY. I say that to say this; Dan Carlin has the research, interest, and curiosity to explore historical topics through a specifically human Lens and I think that is neat and exactly what I want from my historical story teller.

    Honest opinions

For all of those who want some sort of study guide you aren’t going to find that here, this is a show where you can expect to hear one man’s views and opinions of historical topics and he does his best to look at topic from different perspectives. If you are expecting him to be some perfect impartial historian then you obviously haven’t listened to him say on multiple occasions “ I am not a historian”, I may not always agree with his views on a topic but I enjoy listening anyway. It’s good to hear other views on subject, it helps broaden your understanding and make you a more well rounded person, for those who hate on Dan for his point of view you can go live your life in your narrow little world but for me I like growing intellectually and this is a very entertaining way to do it.

    Long time Listener-No More

I’m a long time listener and I’ve bought episodes off your website. But after your Elon musk interview, not anymore. Plus I was put off by your war in the Pacific episodes where you insinuated that Japanese have an inclination towards war and violence that is innate to their race. You neglected the fact the Germany and Italy we’re also in the grips of a fascist governments. I'm also put off on your Wlly George days where are you spewed right wing talking points when you appeared on his show in your early adulthood.

A Master Class in 3-5 Easy Steps

I think the only way to tell you how great this podcast is, how unbelievably well-researched, and how fascinating it can be is to tell you that I have changed entire units of my teaching to reflect the information I have found here. Dan is worth more than the pittance this teacher can spare every month on his Patreon. Worth every minute of your listening time, and if there is a Heaven, then it will have access to this show in perpetuity.

    Celtic Holocaust is just fantastic

If you have a day when you can listen to the 5+ hours of this one show (short by HH standards) this episode is amazing. From the beginning contemplation ( who/ what would you die for?) to the crushing end, this is one of history’s best stories, expertly told.

I can’t say more than what anyone else already has but it’s always wonderful when an episode drops, it’s always content that I cannot stop listening to when I start.

In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.
